Marine Navigation Equipment

Magnetic Marine CompassThere is a wide range of electronic navigation equipment available, but though they make navigation easier, most is still left to the skipper of the boat. Electronic navigation equipment can range from a budget system costing from £700 plus the cost of an auto-pilot if you choose to have one, to the cost-not-a-problem option costing several thousands. Your choice may not be just dependent on your budget, but also may depend on the space you have available for the equipment. Make sure it will all fit before making your final purchase. Also remember that the cheapest option might not be the best - quality could be a problem.

Whichever option you go for remember that a chart of the area in a waterproof wallet, a watch and enough fuel are the most important things to take with you.

Electronic Navigation Suite

An electronic navigation suite comprises of a short list of items. These are:

  • VHF radio
  • Magnetic compass
  • A log to measure your speed
  • A depth sounder
  • A GPS/plotter
  • Autopilot

Sometimes the log and depth sounder can be combined into one piece of equipment thus saving space.
