Gone surfing... svFreedom: Here we go!
Ready or not, we're on our way Thursday, heading out into the Pacific. We've got 580 miles in front of us before we reach the Galapagos, and we are loaded down with provisions for the year, 100 gallons of fuel and 140 gallons of water. As you can see in the photo above, we are also loaded with approximately 400 cans of food that we've removed the label on & painstakingly varnished to prevent rust. As this will be the last port where food prices are low, we've tried to provision the boat for the rest of the year.

Sailing with Nine of Cups: Arrival in Mill Arm Anchorage
We departed the Torrent Bay anchorage around 0800 this morning with nary a cloud in the sky nor a ripple on the water, heading east across the Tasman Bay to D'Urville Island. By 1000, the wind had freshened from the north and we were sailing on lumpy seas at 6 kts making good progress towards our destination. The entrance into Greville Harbour (on D'Urville Island) was not as daunting as the guide book had warned, but the passing of the boulder bank did indeed get the adrenaline flowing a bit. We approached just after low tide. With a push from the incoming tide and lots of the boulder bank exposed, we hugged the port marker and saw least depths of 11' and had no difficulties. Interestingly enough, the local guidebook mentions this natural boulder bank in great detail, but neither the chart plotter (Navionics software) nor C-Map showed its existence. Thank goodness for local knowledge! A good reminder to us never to trust only one source. After the boulder bank, a rather circu

Cruising with Osprey: Back in the Grove
After the crushing disappointment of yesterday, we did have a wonderful sail up to Coconut Grove, Miami. It was another lovely, sunny day and as we sailed along we decided that life wasn't so bad after all. We pulled into the Dinner Key Mooring Field at about 3.30pm and tied up to a secure mooring. We knew that we were going to need things shipped to us so we had to be at a Marina in order to do this. Fortunately the DKMF is a reasonably cheap option and is certainly convenient for grocery shopping as well. Although the cruising scene is not quite as sociable as in Marathon this is an OK place to be whilst we sort out our GPS woes. This morning we were up early and Tom wrestled with the Chartplotter whilst I researched our options for a new unit. The old chart plotter now seems to be functioning OK but does not repower immediately after powering down. According to Garmin customer support this is a definite fault. They have agreed to repair / refurbish the unit under warranty. What's m

Five days in Santiago de Cuba, in the nearby barrio (village) of mella. Where to begin to share our impressions; our observations? It would take pages and pages...so very briefly (we don't have live internet today, anyway):
